Hard work paying off seems to have become a growing trend, starting from India’s present Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi to Raju Yadav, a web developer in Shaadi.com. Both of them used to be ‘chaiwalas’ (roadside tea delivery boys), who changed their life status with hard work and determination. JeevikaMI interacted with Raju Yadav and tried to extract some inspiring instants for our reader. His life story on his love for learning and his enthusiasm towards life is nothing short of a fairy tale or glamour but a piece of inspirational for all of us.
Inspirational life journey of a poor child, who created his own life by taking off poverty to landing a job as web developer.
JMI: Raju Ji, please tell us about your life Journey at Shaadi.com?
Raju Yadav: In 2003, I was hired as a peon in sagaai.com (now known as shaadi.com), where my job was to open & clean the office. My work was to served people tea and water and also do some field work. I always kept at least one hour a day, every day for study, once my office work was over.
In 2015, shaadi.com hired me as a web developer. I am married with a caring wife and having a baby boy.
JMI: When and how did you start your journey in Mumbai?
Raju Yadav: When I was 14 year-old, I realized that there was no chance of earning a livelihood in the village at Hazaribagh in Jharkhand. So, acting on the advice of one of my elders in the family, I came out to Mumbai to my maternal uncle who works as a taxi driver. I joined a tea stall at Chira Bazar in south Mumbai for a salary of Rs 200 Per month as tea delivery boy.
Six months into selling tea, one of the offices, sagaai.com, where I delivered tea hired me as an office boy assistant at Rs. 2000 P.M salary. This new job had better work hours, which allowed me to go back to school for further studies.
I often took career advice from officers working in sagaai.com. I started to stay back for 2-3 hours after work and learn web development/programming. I believe one hour a day is enough, never miss a day, so I gave my complete focus while studying. When an opening came up in the company I applied and post interview I got selected.
JMI: What was your source of motivation in learning computer and completing your education?
Raju Yadav: While working in sagaai.com as office boy, I realized that I could never have a better job until I had proper education. So I went back home on holidays and took admission in the school in my village. I brought the study material back with me and started to learn more as much as I can.
Before I arrived in Mumbai, I had never seen a computer. When I saw computer in sagaai.com, it lured me and forced me to learn computer at anyhow. I joined an online course to learn programming and other computer skills. My colleagues always helped and supported me by providing infrastructure and knowledge. I worked a full shift before spending a few hours in front of the computer, working out what those letters and digits mean and that’s how I learn computer programming.
JMI: You really did a hard work with determination, any piece of advice to the society?
Raju Yadav: The first thing I learn when I came to Mumbai is if you want to get somewhere in life, you have to educate yourself and there is no alternative to that.
I want to tell parents that they must put an absolute premium on their child’s education. If you have money, first spend them on your child’s education rather than to buy land. My advice to students that don’t make the poverty as your excuse for not having education.
JMI: Your Inspirational tag line for success?
Raju Yadav: I believe one hour a day is enough, never miss a day, so I gave my complete focus while studying. With determination, hard work and consistency you can change your life.
Thanks a lot to Mr. Raju Yadav for speaking with JeevikaMI. We wish him all the best for his life ahead.
